From Slave to President
By Boise Artist Pablo Rodriguez

The Middle Passage (early 1600’s – mid 1800’s) In the bottom left corner of the painting is a depiction of how slaves were lined up in a slave ship and transported from Africa to the Americas. This was called the Middle Passage because it was the 2nd leg of a 3-part journey. Ships would leave Europe bound for Africa with cargo such as iron, brandy and firearms. In Africa, this cargo was traded for Africans who were taken from their homes and sold into slavery. The Middle Passage was the leg from Africa to the Americas where the human cargo was tightly packed into the ship as illustrated here and traded for other cargo such as sugar and tobacco in the Americas which was then taken back to Europe.
